Maharaja is a movie released in 2001. It is produced by Bappi Lahiri and directed by David Dhawan. The film stars Bobby Deol, Anushka Sharma, Ajay Devgan, Irrfan Khan and Johnny Lever. The story revolves around the struggles of an honest young man who wants to make his way to rich; however, he has to cross many hurdles in his path along the way. He also needs silverware for each stage of his journey which he can get through robbery-based activities that are strictly forbidden according to society’s rules governing conduct between people that are not related by blood or marriage. This film is a remake of the Telugu movie titled "Pavitra Bandham" (1985), which was directed by Dasari Narayana Rao. The story line in the original was written by renowned screenwriter duo of Udayakrishna and Srikanth. Raja (Bobby Deol) is a happy-go-lucky young man who lives a very rich lifestyle with his father, Rana Pratap Singh (Ashish Vidyarthi) and mother, Manju Devi (Reema Lagoo). Raja's family has been living in the village for generations and earns their livelihood from farming. One day, while chasing a thief in the village, Raja's friend Dongar (Johnny Lever), is shot in the leg. He is rushed to the hospital where he is told that unless he wishes to lose his leg, they need three lakhs for his immediate operation. As Raja has no source of income at the moment, he decides to rob an old man's house in turn for three lakhs; unfortunately, he gets caught by the police who sentence him to five years of rigorous imprisonment. During his jail term, Raja meets Daku Bhau (Ajay Devgn) who provides shelter to him and also helps him attain bail. After he comes out of jail, Raja decides to clear Dongar's debt with the three lakhs that he had robbed. After doing so, Raja sets off on a quest to achieve his ultimate dream of becoming rich. He is told that the only way to get rich is through trading in silverware and he sets off for this venture accompanied by Dongar and Bhau. Raja wins over the trust of a local shopkeeper, Krishna (Shakti Kapoor), who loans him money to trade in silverware. As it happens with every business, there are ups and downs and Raja gets cheated by one of his partners at a seemingly lucrative deal. Though he gets angry at Daku Bhau for not being able to help him, they both realize that they are all in this together. At the same time, the police are looking for Bhau in Raja's disappearance since several of his associates have gone missing. Even though Daku Bhau has helped all of them when they came under threat, he cannot help Raja and decides to leave him and take his family with him. Raja is very upset by this and takes a vow to get their silverware back no matter what it takes. So he devises a plan; by kidnapping Krishna's son (Varun Badola), he disguises himself as Krishna and robs Krishna of his family silverware worth one crore. cfa1e77820
